Eating less to lose weight is an option but not the best option. If you want to lose weight, your best option is to first focus on increasing the amount of your physical activity.
The most important thing you need to understand first is that the only way you can lose weight is if you create a daily caloric deficit. You have to burn more calories than you consume. So, you either decrease your caloric intake by eating fewer calories or you increase your caloric expenditure by increasing your physical activity. By physical activity, I mean any form of physical activity or exercise (taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking, weight training, playing basketball, etc.).
Here are three reasons why increasing your physical activity is the better option when it comes to losing weight:
1. Chances are you are very inactive and are living a sedentary lifestyle. The statistics back this up. Daily activity levels continue to decline as people are spending less and less of their free time engaged in physical activity. It is now estimated that two thirds of the U.S. adult population is overweight. If this is the case, it should be quite easy to increase your physical activity level to start burning more calories.
2. If you focus on eating less to lose weight, you risk creating health and metabolism problems if you decrease your caloric intake lower than 1200 to 1500 calories a day. If you have been inactive for many years, your metabolism may be so slow that to reduce your caloric intake to a level lower than what your body burns on a daily basis (basal metabolic rate) would be unhealthy.
3. Restricting calorie intake will not only cause you to lose fat, you will also lose valuable muscle tissue. Even more so the more inactive you are because if you are not using your muscles to perform physical activity, you will lose them (muscle atrophy) over time. This is counter-productive for weight loss because muscle tissue burns more calories than fat tissue does, so muscle mass is a key factor in weight loss. Increasing your physical activity will help you maintain your muscle mass or increase it depending on the physical activity you choose to engage in. Keep in mind that selecting physical activity that will increase your muscle mass will ultimately help you lose weight faster because it will burn more calories. It will also enable you to better maintain that weight loss.
In conclusion, increasing your physical activity on a daily basis to a level that burns more calories than you are consuming is the more effective and safe way to lose weight. Once you have successfully integrated physical activity or exercise into your daily routine, you can then focus on improving your diet by eliminating bad food choices and replacing them with healthier options that will enhance your ability to lose weight and keep it off forever.
